Strategic plan aimed at transforming the European Union into a climate-neutral society, in which the economic growth is dissociated from the use of resources and in which no person and no place are left behind. The Green Deal comes from the belief that climate change is the greatest challenge of our time but that it also represents a unique opportunity to build a new, sustainable economic model.
Climate
By 2030, a minimum 55% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions, compared to 1990 levels. By 2050, climate neutrality. The EU’s commitment in this area is aimed on the one hand to combat the climate change and on the other hand to support the adaptation of societies to its impacts.
Environment and oceans
Protect biodiversity and ecosystems. Reduce air, water and soil pollution. Get a circular economy. Improve waste management and ensure the sustainability of blue economy and fishing.
Energy
Transition to clean energy through specific targets, including: ensure an affordable and reliable supply of energy, mostly based on renewable sources; develop a fully integrated, interconnected and digitised energy market, give priority to energy efficiency e improve the energy performance of buildings.
Transport
90% reduction in transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Agriculture
Making agriculture fully sustainable by ensuring food security, reducing the environmental and climate footprint of the food system, strengthening its resilience and guiding the global transition towards a competitive sustainability, from producer to consumer.
Finance and regional development
By 2030, the European Commission will mobilise € 1 trillion in sustainable investments to achieve the targets of the Green Deal.
Research and innovation
Accelerating and guiding the changes necessary for the full implementation of the Green Deal through the research and innovation. Horizon Europe is a program launched in 2021 to guide the necessary structural changes to achieve climate neutrality and ensure an inclusive ecological and economic transition.
Industry
Take advantage of low-emission technologies, focus on sustainable products and services.
